Cathy is a South Australian artist, she has been meticulously creating mandalas for the past 16 years. Cathys’ love of small details had lead her to intricate drawings taking anywhere from 100 to 300 hours to complete. The long hours lead her to no longer seek instant gratification but to see beauty in the things that take time. It has been a natural progression for to combine both her love of the circle with her passion for nature and the need to preserve what we have. Cathys current work, “Endangered” recently won the Dr Wendy Wicks Peoples Choice Award as well as being “highly Commended” of the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize. Cathy also went on to win the Woman in Innovations Awards for the Arts, “Annual Winnovation Awards recognise the South Australian women who are contributing to the state’s innovation economy by creating jobs, wealth and solutions to address some of the world’s biggest problems and creating positive change” Cathy was also named one of the 21 South Australians to watch for 2023 by The Advertiser.
Mandala and mindfulness.
Mandalas are a beautiful way for students to not only be creative but will also serve as a great tool to manage stress. This form of art is achievable to all students and helps nurture their confidence, within a couple of minutes students will be able to see the art forming and will be captured by their own ability to create something wonderful. My workshops are conducted in silence, although some students may struggle at first very quickly they give in to silence and immerse themselves in the creating. There is no judgement and each creation is for the student only. Erasers are not used during the workshop and mistakes are explained as only a change in direction…some of the best ideas come from mistakes. I teach every student on an individual basis and to each students level. This means that children with special needs can also feel included in the creating. I encourage teachers to play some quiet music and they are welcome to join in the process if they wish.
